When: Thursday April 2, 2015, 12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Where: Genesee Community College / Batavia Campus

William W. Stuart Forum

One College Rd., Batavia, NY 14020

Background: On Thursday, April 2, 2015 from 12:30 p.m. – 2 p.m., students, faculty and staff will "Experience Brazil" with a series of Brazil-based activities. The event takes place in the GCC Forum and is organized and hosted by the college's Global Education Committee under the sponsorship of the Students Activities Board.

Each year the committee selects a country or globally-based them and presents a series of events around this theme. Brazil as the fifth largest country in the world recently achieved a surge of global attention with the World Cup Soccer Finals and the upcoming 2015 Summer Olympics. "These two major events provided GCC with the perfect opportunity to explore Brazil and help students learn more about its culture and people," said committee member Nina Mortellaro.

"Experience Brazil" will feature music by Panloco, one of Western New York's most versatile steel bands. Formed in 1995, the group is led by percussionist Ted Canning and will focus on Brazilian rhythms for the day.

GCC adjunct dance instructor Amy Taravella, together with GCC students Jose "Mario" Chicas-Chandive and Annerik Robles-Irene, and professional dancer Sarah Haykel from Buffalo choreographed and will perform a selection of Samba dances. A demonstration of how to dance the Samba will call on members of the audience to participate and join in the fun!

The audience will be able to enjoy samples of Brazilian foods and find out who the winners of the Mask Competition are.

In addition, save the date for GCC's Forum Players' presentation of BRAZILIAN FOLKTALES on Friday, April 24, 2015, at 7 p.m. in Stuart Steiner Theatre.
