Facebook Friends Help Staunton Decide Summer Camp Theme
"The Ultimate Mashup" will be the theme this year for Camp Staunton 2011
STAUNTON, VA (02/28/2011)(readMedia)-- The Staunton Parks and Recreation Department will begin accepting Camp Staunton 2011 Registrations on March 1st. There are no registrations restrictions with regard to residency. The registrations are accepted on a first come first serve basis until all three camps are full.
This year the Staunton Parks and Recreation Department asked their Facebook Friends, over 1000 strong for ideas for the summer camp (Camp Staunton 2011) theme and received numerous responses. Ideas varied from encouraging community support, to gardening, to Glee and a few ideas in between. The Department decided on the "The Ultimate Mashup". The term mashup is used by computer geeks and Gleeks as well. Probably most notable is the TV show Glee's version where two different songs are mashed into one. This musical element will be a portion of how we incorporate the theme this summer, but we also expect to have some fun taking two ideas for activities like kickball and freeze tag and meshing them one. Besides mashing physical activities we plan to continue to offer fine art classes mashing the left brain with the right brain for some awesome drawing classes. The theme should encourage creativity in both staff and campers.
The Staunton Parks and Recreation Summer Camp is unique for several reasons, we rarely have to hire staff as our staff turnover rate is minimal. This is very important as our mature staff have to time to create stability and establish trusting relationships with parents and children over several years. Additionally, we separate our camps according to age. Camp Staunton 2011 has three different camp sites within our park system, each housing a different age group. Parent concerns about age appropriateness, bullying, exposure to advanced themes are allayed by this unique component. We hire outside experts to teach our campers various skills such as fishing, cooking and archery. The campers choose from a multitude of these options for their afternoon activities. Field trips are a regular occurrence at Camp Staunton 2011 as we go skating every Wednesday and take out-of-city field trips on Friday. The fact that the camp setting is not institutional but located within the parks gives the Staunton Parks and Recreation Department the great facilities advantage of pools, lakes, hiking trails, playgrounds, fields and courts, the duck pond... you get the idea.
The cost of the camp is $80 per week or $540 for all 8 weeks if paid in advance of June 1, 2011. There is a $10 registration fee. The 8 week camp begins on June 13th and runs through August 5th. For much more information please call 540-332-3945. The Registration form is downloadable at www.stauntonparksandrecreationrevolution.com. For customer convenience, credit card payments are accepted.
