Fairgoers Compete for Blue Ribbon in Iowa State Fair Cow Chip Throwing Contest

DES MOINES, IA (08/18/2017) (readMedia)-- Mark Ferred of KCWI 23 was the winner of the Celebrity division of the ESPN Cow Chip Throwing contest judged Wednesday at the 2017 Iowa State Fair.

In the Men's division Nolan Tabel claimed first place with a toss of 110 feet. Julia Wearmonth of Des Moines took home the blue ribbon in the Women's division with a toss of 70 feet, while Cater Metcalf of Pleasantville won the Youth division with a 80-foot throw.

More than 170 contestants tried their hands at hurling the cow chips.

The contest was part of "Rural Americana Olde Tyme Competitions" in Farm Bureau Pioneer Hall. A first prize of $5 and ribbons were awarded to each class.
