Sonny Mayo from his new “Chasing the Chord” CD

BATAVIA, NY (11/30/2016)(readMedia)-- With hopes of journeying to Washington, D.C. and Richmond, Virginia to explore important historical sites, museums and battlefields during the College's spring break next March, the History Club of Genesee Community College is excited to announce a benefit concert. Sponsored by CY Farms, An Evening with Sonny Mayo is scheduled for Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. in the Stuart Steiner Theater, and will feature music from Mayo's newest CD, "Chasing the Chord." All proceeds from the concert will be dedicated to the History Club's first-ever spring break history tour.

Mayo released his first album, "So Far So Good," out of Nashville in 1981. The album was critically acclaimed by Record World magazine and culminated a six-year apprenticeship in Los Angeles and Nashville. Since then, Mayo, currently a professor of Speech and Theatre Arts at GCC, has released 11 albums on the indie label, Thunder Road Music, all while maintaining a successful and distinguished career as a GCC professor. His most recent CD is a blend of folk, blues and Americana, rich with vivid characters and editorial comments on societal issues.

The two professors have their office suites in the same hallway at GCC's Batavia Campus and their collegial conversation lead to the dual opportunity to share the new music from one while supporting experiential learning for the students of the other.

"Educational spring breaks have become an important facet to the student experience and to learning outcomes. As students see these historic places for themselves outside of a classroom, they come away with a new appreciation for the problems, opportunities and even mistakes made by people in the past. They also learn about themselves, the world around them, and often, they make life-long friendships," Maxfield said. "It is an honor that my colleague, Frank (Sonny) Mayo is willing to share an evening of his latest music for such a worthy cause."

Advance tickets are encouraged by contacting Derek Maxfield, GCC's associate professor of History and History Club advisor, or any club member. Presale tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for GCC students and children under 12. Tickets will be available at the door on the day of the event for $12.
