MEMPHIS, TN (09/09/2009)(readMedia)-- The Riverfront Development Corporation and Mud Island River Park have joined the American Lung Association's Fight for Air by agreeing to serve as venue sponsor for the association's annual Lung Walk. On May 8, 2010, Mud Island River Park will be the site for the American Lung Association's largest Memphis fundraiser.
"We are thrilled to have these two generous groups on board to help us raise awareness and funds for the fight against lung disease," said Dr. Betty Lew, a Lung Association volunteer and Regional Leadership Council member. "With so many children and adults in the Memphis area affected by breathing problems, our community will benefit tremendously from this partnership."
According to the American Lung Association, nearly 114,000 children and adults in Shelby County-about 13 percent of the county's total population-are affected by asthma, chronic lung disease and lung cancer. Funds raised by the Lung Walk help support community lung health education and advocacy programs. The event also helps fund national and local research, such as the work being done at the University of Tennessee to learn how the lungs protect themselves from tobacco smoke.
