Fine Arts on Display Throughout Lougheed Festival of the Arts at SUNY Potsdam

The Art Museum at SUNY Potsdam will once again host the Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition during the Lougheed Festival of the Arts. Last year’s show can be seen here.

POTSDAM, NY (04/23/2014)(readMedia)-- An array of artworks will be on display across the SUNY Potsdam campus throughout the 2014 Lougheed Festival of the Arts.

The celebrated artist Lars-Erik Fisk will be in residence on campus for the third annual festival. The former art director for the band Phish, Fisk is known for his unique spherical designs of manmade and contemporary items. A New York City artist, Fisk is originally from Norwich, Vt., and is celebrated through the Northeast. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Vermont, where he also completed a semester abroad in Rome, and went on to complete his Master of Fine Arts degree at Columbia University. He has worked as graphic designer and art director for Seven Days, Burlington's weekly arts and culture newspaper before being tapped as the art director for Phish. His recent cross-country show, "Self-Storage," was featured in an exhibition at the Gibson Gallery, and explored overconsumption as reflected in the proliferation of self-storage facilities to hold Americans' overflowing belongings. Fisk will offer a lecture on the future of sculpture on Monday, April 28 at 6:30 p.m. in Kellas Hall Room 101, and will unveil a permanent outdoor campus sculpture on Friday, May 2 near the Performing Arts Center.

The Art Museum at SUNY Potsdam will present the annual Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition, featuring works by 14 graduating seniors from the College's selective BFA program in visual arts. The BFA Exhibition will be on display in the Roland Gibson Gallery through May 18. The artists include: John Alleyne, Bonnie Anderson, Page Collins, Samantha Combs, Katelyn Hritcko, Caryn Kelleher, Claire Magnusen, Dennis McCorry, Jeri Miller, Sarah Place, Stephanie Ruiz, Jessica Silveira, Kendra Stenger and Lauren Umstead. This show is funded in part by the Student Government Association, the Potsdam College Foundation and the Sweetgrass Foundation. Admission to the Gibson Gallery, located at Brainerd Hall, is free, and the exhibition space is handicapped-accessible. The museum is open to the public from noon until 5 p.m. on Monday and Friday, from noon until 7 p.m. from Tuesday through Thursday, and from noon until 4 p.m. on Saturdays. There will be a showcase of works by accomplished SUNY Potsdam art alumni throughout the festival in the Hosmer Gallery, located at The Crane School of Music. The Art Alumni Showcase features works by Sue Burdick Young '81, ceramics; Mark Dye '95, photojournalism; Katsitsionni Fox '95, prints; Tanya Gadbaw '08, painting, and Isaac Snell '09, ceramics. There will be a reception with the alumni artists on Tuesday, April 29 at 5 p.m. in the gallery.

Art students will create a menagerie of illuminated sculptures across the Academic Quad for the third Festival of Light on Wednesday, April 30 at 7 p.m. The rain date for this event is May 1 at the same time. Guests are invited to stop by and watch as these illuminated sculptures light up the quad at dusk, seeing the unique works both before and after the sun sets.

Dr. Nancy Ramage will offer a lecture entitled "Matisse, Picasso and the Cone Sisters" on Thursday, May 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Raymond Hall Eighth Floor Dining Room. The Charles A. Dana Professor of the Humanities and Arts Emerita at Ithaca College, Ramage has been a visiting fellow at Cambridge University. She is the co-author of "The Cone Sisters of Baltimore: Collecting at Full Tilt," "The British Museum Concise Introduction: Ancient Rome" and "Roman Art: Fifth Edition."

New to the festival this year is an Art and Fine Crafts Market sponsored by the St. Lawrence County Arts Council, featuring local and regional artisans. The market will be offered on Friday, May 2 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Barrington Student Union.

Hermitage Artist Retreat Executive Director Bruce Rodgers '71 will present a lecture on "The Nature of Art" on Friday, May 2 at 2 p.m. in Brainerd Hall Room 202. After earning his bachelor's degree in music education from Crane, he went on to complete his master's degree in English and creative writing at Indiana University. A playwright, he also co-authored the popular book, "Innovation Inc.: A Guide to Creativity in the Workplace."

On Sunday, May 4, visual art student Veronica Lavia '15 will present a video installation inspired by her original short story. Entitled "Dust," the piece is set in a future where time has time has stopped moving and humanity has abandoned Earth after the planet's water has been depleted. The presentation will be at 4 p.m. in Brainerd Hall Room 202.
