ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (01/03/2012)(readMedia)-- The Flagler College Community Lecture Series will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 24, at 10 a.m. with a lecture entitled "Let's Talk about the Birds and the Bees and the Bombs: Environmental Factors and Consequences in War." The lecture, delivered by Brenda Kauffman, Ph.D., assistant professor of Social Sciences, will examine environmental factors as both causes of and consequences of war.

"In some cases, environmental problems have been direct causes of war," Kauffman says. "Resource scarcity, for example, can lead to conflict and engagement. In other cases, we see war's negative consequences to the environment, including destruction or loss of species, contamination of water and air, and the production of nuclear waste." Kauffman will discuss these issues with reference to a range of historical conflicts, from Mayan warfare to the French Revolution and contemporary combat.

Kauffman earned her Ph.D. in Political Science from Auburn University, a Master's Degree in Liberal Arts and Philosophy from Spring Hill College and a Bachelor's in Philosophy and Religious Studies from Georgia State University. Her areas of specific interest include environmental politics, international organizations and international political economy. She is currently researching global environmental governance and ecological economics in the international political economy.
