Players line up for the start of a past Flagler Golf Classic

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (09/12/2014)(readMedia)-- On Sept. 26, Flagler College will partner with Ameris Bank to present the College's popular President's Golf Classic, a four-person team scramble tournament played at TPC Sawgrass, one of the most beautiful courses in the Southeast.

This event has become one of the foundations of fundraising for College athletic scholarships; last year the tournament and its accompanying banquet netted $85,000 for scholarship funding.

The tournament will take place at the newly-renovated Dye's Valley Golf Course at TPC Sawgrass. The 6,900-yard course, with water on 14 holes, is best known as the sibling to the world-renowned Players Stadium Course. It was designed by Pete Dye, Bobby Weed, and Jerry Pate and has hosted such events as the Senior Players Championship, the NFL Golf Classic, and the Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open. Dye's Valley will be closed for renovation until Sept. 21, and the Flagler College President's Golf Classic will be the first private event held on the newly-restored course.

As in past tournaments, the team with the lowest cumulative score will have their names added to the Abare Cup, a trophy which was introduced in 2009 by Flagler's Board of Trustees as a tribute to College President William T. Abare, Jr. Prizes will also be awarded for the longest drive and closest to the pin.

Various sponsorship packages are available and individual player registration is $300. Registration covers cart, greens fees, range balls, tournament golf shirt, prizes and an awards reception. Additionally, a portion of the registration fee benefits the Flagler College Athletics scholarship fund and is tax deductible.

Registration and a continental breakfast will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 26, with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Sponsors include title sponsor Ameris Bank along with TPC Sawgrass Dye's Valley; Bozard Ford; St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park; Baker's Sporting Goods; Thompson Baker; Massey Services, Inc.; Aramark; Wheeler Real Estate Investment Trust; Retirement Wealth Specialists; Casa Monica Hotel; Burkhardt Sales and Service; Converged Communications; Holmes & Brakel Business Interiors; Jack Wilson Family of Dealerships; Kresge, Platt & Abare; Valley Crest Landscape Maintenance; and many more.

The college offers 29 majors, 34 minors and two pre-professional programs - the largest being business administration, communication, psychology and education. Small by intent, Flagler College has an enrollment of about 2,500 students, as well as a satellite campus at Tallahassee Community College in Tallahassee, Fla. U.S. News & World Report and The Princeton Review regularly feature Flagler as a college that offers quality education at a relatively low cost. A Flagler education is less than half the cost of similar private colleges, and competitive with many state universities. A relatively young institution (founded in 1968), Flagler College is also noted for its historic beauty. The centerpiece of the campus is the former Hotel Ponce de Leon, a grand resort built in 1888 by Henry M. Flagler, an industrialist, railroad pioneer and co-founder of Standard Oil. The Ponce has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. For more on Flagler College, visit www.flagler.edu.
