ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (03/31/2014)(readMedia)-- Flagler College Director of News and Information Brian Thompson recently presented a session on "Opinion that Matters" at the National College Media Convention in New York City.

The talk was based on an article Thompson wrote for the book "Journalism of Ideas: Brainstorming, Developing, and Selling Stories in the Digital Age."

"It's always exciting to see that much interest from students in opinion writing," said Thompson, who teaches an opinion writing class at Flagler and also serves as the advisor to The Gargoyle, Flagler's online-only student newspaper. "It's an important field of journalism that really connects with readers. But there aren't that many courses or resources out for young journalists wanting to get into it, so I love the opportunity to do it."

The convention was presented by the College Media Association, which serves student media pros, staffs and programs with education, research and resources. It was attended by nearly 1,200 college journalists and media advisors.

Flagler College is an independent, four-year, comprehensive baccalaureate college located in St. Augustine, Fla. The college offers 29 majors, 34 minors and two pre-professional programs, the largest majors being business, education and communication. Small by intent, Flagler College has an enrollment of about 2,500 students, as well as a satellite campus at Tallahassee Community College in Tallahassee, Fla. A Flagler education is less than half the cost of similar private colleges, and competitive with many state universities. A relatively young institution (founded in 1968), Flagler College is also noted for its historic beauty. The centerpiece of the campus is the former Hotel Ponce de Leon, a grand resort built in 1888 by Henry M. Flagler, industrialist, railroad pioneer and co-founder of Standard Oil. The Ponce has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. For more on Flagler College, visit www.flagler.edu.
