Flagler announces Lewis-Wiley Scholarship Award recipients

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (04/29/2011)(readMedia)-- Flagler College has selected two new recipients of the Lewis-Wiley Scholarship award. Chandler Von Cannon, from Kure Beach, N.C., and Zac Hays, from Jacksonville, Florida, were recently chosen to receive the scholarship award.

Von Cannon is a member of the National Honor Society and the BETA Club. She is a nationally recognized and regionally-ranked competitive surfer. In addition, she served as captain of her swim team, is a Young Life leader and is a member of her community ocean rescue team.

Hays is a member of the National Honor Society, the Interact Club, Young Life and the Wildlife Club. He is the editor of his school's newspaper and has won numerous writing competitions. In addition, Hays has volunteered with organizations such as the American Cancer Society and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The Lewis-Wiley Scholarship is awarded annually to two incoming freshmen who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement, leadership and moral force of character.

The [Lewis-Wiley] scholarships are based on merit without regard to financial need.

In addition to scholastic achievement, aptitude and involvement in extracurricular activities, participation in competitive sports and evidence of leadership qualities are considered important factors in the selection process.

The Lewis-Wiley Scholarship was established by the Flagler Foundation to honor the late Mr. Lawrence Lewis, Jr., and the late Mrs. James L. Wiley.

The Lewis Wiley families provide the major funding for the scholarship and the College draws from institutional funds, and for Florida residents, the Florida Resident Access Grant (FRAG), so that each Lewis-Wiley Scholar receives full tuition for four years.

Von Cannon is currently attending Eugene Ashley High School in Wilmington, N.C. Hays is currently attending St. Johns Country Day School in Jacksonville, Florida, and plans on majoring in sport management.

Flagler College is an independent, four-year, comprehensive baccalaureate college located in St. Augustine, Fla.
