Incoming freshmen take part in a beach cleanup event on August 31 as part of the college’s new Fall Orientation program.

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (09/03/2013)(readMedia)-- Thirty-five new students at Flagler College took part in a beach cleanup event on August 31 as part of the college's new Fall Orientation program.

"The event saw these incoming students, new to the St. Augustine community, immediately contribute their time and effort to make St. Augustine, their new home, a better place," said Flagler College Vice President of Student Services Daniel Stewart.

The cleanup covered approximately one mile of beach from dune to waters' edge from the pier at St. Augustine Beach to A Street.

Flagler launched the Building Your Legacy program for freshman this year, which includes First Year Advisers, a four-day orientation spent in a variety of academic and social events to ease the transition from high school to college and an honor pledge, among other things.

The program is designed to make sure that all first year students begin with a solid foundation for what will become their legacy. Flagler faculty and staff have spent two years studying, developing and implementing the initiative, which is part of the college's larger First Year Experience initiative.
