LATHAM, NY (03/07/2012)(readMedia)-- National Guard Brigadier General (one-star) Harry Miller, a veteran of the Iraq War, has been named Deputy Commander of the 10,500-Soldier New York Army National Guard.
Miller has been serving as Senior Commander of Fort Drum and the 10th Mountain Division, near Watertown, New York, on active duty since 2010. He was responsible for the readiness, safety, and well being of the 38,000 Soldiers, Families and civilian employees at the post.
Prior to that he served in Iraq for two deployments from 2006 to 2008 and then as Director of Joint Operations for the New Hampshire National Guard in Concord, N.H., and as the Director of Doctrine, Training and Force Development at the National Guard Bureau in Arlington, Virginia.
In his new role, Miller will assist the Commander of the New York Army National Guard, Maj. Gen. Patrick Murphy, in overseeing the training, deployment and family readiness of the force.
"I'm pleased to have Harry Miller serve in the senior leadership of the New York Army National Guard," Murphy said, "He brings with him a wealth of experience gained through combat deployments, his work at Fort Drum, and his previous service with the New Hampshire National Guard."
Murphy also serves as the Adjutant General of New York, reporting directly to Gov. Andrew Cuomo on the readiness of the 20,000-member New York State Military Forces, which include the Army and Air National Guard, the New York Naval Militia and the state-only New York Guard volunteer force.
An employee of Pfizer in his civilian life, Miller resides in Nashua, New Hampshire, with his wife Melissa and three daughters; Courtney, Emily and Abbey.
Miller replaces Brig. Gen. Paul Genereux who retired earlier this year after serving more than 39 years in the Army National Guard.

The New York Army National Guard's major commands include the 42nd Infantry Division headquarters, the 42nd Combat Aviation Brigade, the 53rd Troop Command, the 27th Brigade Combat Team, the 369th Sustainment Brigade and the 153rd Troop Command.
There are 1,800 New York Army National Guard Soldiers currently on active duty preparing to deploy to Kuwait, Afghanistan, and other locations. In 2011 more than 2,500 Army National Guard Soldiers responded to flooding in the Adirondacks, Hudson Valley, Long Island and Binghamton area in the wake of Tropical Storm Irene.
Miller's military assignments also include Active Army service with the 1st Armored Division, the 82nd Airborne Division, and the 1st Special Forces Group, as well as the New Hampshire National Guard.
During his first combat tour Miller was assigned to the Iraq Assistance Group as the senior advisor to Iraqi Security Forces along the Iraq/Iran border. During his second tour he served with the 5th Special Forces Group and the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force-Arabian Peninsula as the senior advisor to the Commander of Multinational Corps -Iraq.
Miller holds an Associate of Arts degree in Liberal Arts from Valley Forge Military Junior College in Wayne Pennsylvania, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania, a Masters of Business Administration from Saint Martin's College in Lacey, Washington, and a Masters in Strategic Studies from the US Army War College.
His military education includes attendance at the Army Officer Basic and Advanced courses, the Combined Arms Services Staff School, the Command and General Staff College, the Army War College, and the Army's Strategic Leadership and Development Basic and Intermediate courses.
Miller's awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (awarded twice), the Bronze Star (awarded twice), the Meritorious Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Special Forces Tab, the Ranger Tab, and the Master Parachutists Badge.
