OSWEGO, NY (11/14/2012)(readMedia)-- Wallace (Wally) Yelverton of Endwell, a 1977 graduate of State University of New York at Oswego, was honored for his achievements in track and field by being inducted Oct. 27 into the Oswego Athletic Hall of Fame in the Sheldon Hall Ballroom on the Oswego campus.

He solidified himself as one of the greatest throwers in Oswego State history by winning four SUNY Athletic Conference indoor and outdoor and four state track and field shot put titles in 1976 and 1977, as well as the 1977 state weight throw title. Yelverton earned All-America status twice after recording seventh- and ninth-place finishes in the shot put at the NCAA Championships in 1976 and 1977, respectively.

He established three school records in the shot put in indoor and outdoor track and field and the 35-pound weight throw during his intercollegiate athletic career. All three records still stand.

Yelverton transferred from Iowa State University, where he earned a scholarship to play football. At Oswego, he realized his dream to become an industrial arts teacher.

Professionally, Yelverton served as president of the Southern Tier Technology Education Association and was recognized as the 1990 STTEA Regional Teacher of the Year during his time as a teacher at Union-Endicott High School. He was also a curriculum developer and trainer for the state Education Department.

Yelverton is also a member of the Maine-Endwell Athletic Hall of Fame and the Maine-Endwell Golden 50 squad.

A 151-year-old comprehensive college, SUNY Oswego enrolls about 8,000 students in its College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; School of Business; School of Communication, Media and the Arts; and School of Education. U.S. News Media Group counts SUNY Oswego among the top public regional universities in the North for 2013, and the Princeton Review includes Oswego in its 2013 college guidebook "The Best Northeastern Colleges," as well as its 2013 list of "best value" colleges and universities nationally.
