Sloane Morrow, recipient of National Campus Compact’s Newman Civic Fellows Award

STORM LAKE, IOWA (04/01/2014)(readMedia)-- Storm Lake, Iowa (March 31, 2014) – Sloane Morrow, a sophomore elementary education major from Fort Dodge was selected by Campus Compact as one of five Iowa college students to receive the national Newman Civic Fellows Award.

Sloane is an active student leader and performs service work in the Storm Lake community and beyond. She works closely with children of all ages by volunteering at the East Early Childhood Center, assisting students with homework and developing additional skills with The Bridge of Storm Lake, and through her involvement with the BV Buddies Mentor program.

She is a member of the Iowa College AmeriCorps Program, and Slone is engaged in leadership and civic activities on the BVU campus through her role as Campus Compact Civic Ambassador and her involvement with AWOL (Alternative Week of Offsite Learning), Student MOVE (Mobilizing Outreach Volunteer Efforts), Leadership Cohort Program and other organizations.

"To say that my service through Buena Vista University and the Storm Lake Community has influenced me is an understatement," said Sloane. "My service here has fueled my passion for helping others; taught me more about diversity, equality and the needs of others in ways that I could have never imagined; directed me onto my path as a future educator and has helped unlock the person I was meant to be."

"Sloane is very deserving of this honor, and her name will be added to a list of students around the country who are actively making a difference in their communities," said Dr. Ashley Farmer-Hanson, director of civic engagement at Buena Vista University. "She is very passionate about making a difference in the lives of others and has proven that she wants to live a life of service to others."

Campus Compact is a national coalition of more than 1,100 college and university presidents, who are committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education. The award is named in memory of Frank Newman, co-founder of the national Campus Compact organization, who dedicated his life to creating systemic change through education reform.

Sloane was nominated for the honor by BVU President Fred Moore, a member of Iowa Campus Compact, a statewide association of Iowa college and university presidents who are committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education by educating students for active citizenship and building strong communities.
