Timothy Frerichs’ artwork

BATAVIA, NY (10/12/2016)(readMedia)-- A curiosity in the process of knowledge formation drives the conceptual framework for Timothy Frerichs' artwork. With the idea that "to categorize is to know," he explores how gathering objects for information and the creation of knowledge constitutes and develops into a reality, particularly in terms of how culturally accepted concepts evolve and become mainstream. Frerichs exhibit, ".8° C" (the temperature that the earth has warmed since the 1960's) is currently on display at the Rosalie "Roz" Steiner Art Gallery at Genesee Community College through Friday, October 28, 2016.

With his works, Frerichs seeks to address and inform ways of responding to and observing the natural world. In particular, he enjoys investigating how culturally accepted concepts evolved and have become mainstream, exploring object gatherings (collecting/collections) for information and the creation of knowledge.

"The drawing process is vital to my work and is a significant element in the creation process and resulting piece," Frerich explains. "I utilize drawings as a means of investigating and process of knowledge gathering. The elemental quality of basic material combination and their inherent textures intrigues me and is reflected in the physicality of the work."

Frerichs received a bachelor's degree in Arts from St. Olaf College in Minnesota, and a master's degree in Arts and Fine Arts from the University of Iowa. He has received numerous awards including two Fulbright awards, a Netherland-America Foundation Cultural Grant, a United States Embassy, The Hague, Project Grant, a Scandinavian-America Foundation Fellowship, three NYFA S.O.S. Grants, and a Constance Saltonstall Foundation Grant for Printmaking. Frerichs was also awarded the 2015 President's Award for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, Fredonia State University. His drawings, installations, prints, and artist books have been widely exhibited internationally and nationally. His artwork is included in international and national public, corporate and private collections. Frerichs is currently a professor of Art in the Department of Visual Arts and New Media at SUNY Fredonia.
