Frugal Snack Foods Win State Fair Honors

DES MOINES, IA (08/19/2018) (readMedia)-- Joseph Ridgway of Johnston won first place and a $25 gift card in the Sleepy Hollow Appetizer Contest judged Wednesday at the 2018 Iowa State Fair.

Samantha Hilbert of Urbandale earned second place and Megan Vandevoorde of Altoona claimed third place.

Judges also awarded Honorable Mention of Jameson Sherlock of Iowa City.

Participants between the ages of 10 and 17 were challenged to create an award winning appetizer on a budget.

Entries were judged on flavor and appearance.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 171 divisions, 727 classes and over 9,574 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
