FuturPointe Dance Company Travels to SUNY Potsdam for Concert
Rochester-Based Dance Company Performs March 2; Group will offer Residency at Department of Theatre & Dance
POTSDAM, NY (02/23/2012)(readMedia)-- FuturPointe Dance, a dynamic young contemporary dance company, will travel to SUNY Potsdam to present an upcoming performance. Founded in 2009, the Rochester-based group will offer an evening of dance in the Dunn Hall Theater at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 2.
FuturPointe was co-founded by Guy Thorne, a former dancer with Garth Fagan Dance, and N'Jelle Gage, who has trained and performed with companies throughout the Caribbean. FuturPointe's work is characterized by an eclectic, multi-genre repertoire that is in touch with contemporary/urban culture.
Through trans-media collaborations with choreographers, photographers, videographers, visual artists, composers, live musicians and puppeteers, the company's aesthetic is a collision of culture, rhythms and varied choreographic styles expressing theme, story and character. FuturPointe's fusion of dance forms of the Caribbean, the African Diaspora, ballet, Latin movement, reggae and the urban vocabulary has engaged new and non-traditional dance audiences throughout New York State and the Midwest. The company roster is culturally diverse, with dancers hailing from Jamaica, Guyana, the Ukraine, New Orleans and New York.
In addition to works created by Thorne and Gage, the evening will include dances choreographed by FuturPointe's resident choreographer and creative director, Heather Roffe. Also an alumnus of Garth Fagan Dance, and most recently a Visiting Professor of Dance at SUNY Potsdam, Roffe performed and presented several dance works in the Fall 2011 Faculty Dance Concert at SUNY Potsdam. During their visit, FuturPointe will work with dance students through a residency at the College.
The FuturPointe Dance performance is sponsored by the SUNY Potsdam Department of Theatre and Dance, the College Dance Ensemble and the Student Government Association.
Tickets will be available at the door only, one hour prior to the concert, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free for all SUNY Potsdam students with current ID, and $5 for general admission.
