BATAVIA, NY (08/15/2016)(readMedia)-- Three members of the Genesee Community College HOSA Future Healthcare Professionals charter earned recognition and high honors in March, taking seven of 15 possible medals awarded for online testing achievements at the HOSA Spring Leadership Conference. Seventeen competitors from three post/secondary schools, GCC, GVEP Adult LPN Program and Cornell University, participated in seven examinations in pathophysiology, medical terminology, pharmacology, human growth and development and nutrition, and awards were given to the top three finishers in each exam. Participating and representing GCC were Olubunmi Ajayi from Nigeria, Kaylene Barclay from Oakfield-Alabama and Adeline Nzede from Syracuse.

HOSA Future Healthcare Professionals is the largest nationally recognized organization for middle school, high school and post-secondary/collegiate students who are interested in healthcare professions. With over 200,000 members, the organization has representation in 50 states as well as Germany, Italy, Canada, District of Columbia, America Samoa and Puerto Rico. HOSA strives to enhance the delivery of compassionate, quality health care by providing opportunities for knowledge, skill and leadership development of all health science education students, therefore, helping the student meet the needs of the health care community.

The GCC HOSA charter started in the fall of 2014, but did not get fully off the ground until a year later with five initial members. Despite its early roots, Ajayi, Nzede and Barclay have already provided the group with recognition and honors. Barclay was the top finisher in the pathophysiology and pharmacology exams and earned a third place finish in the medical terminology test. Ajayi earned a first place medal for the medical terminology test and a third place medal in nutrition and Nzede took second in the nutrition test and third in the human growth and development exam.

"I am very proud of these young women," Sue Mills, GCC HOSA advisor said. "The results of the medal competitions were phenomenal for a charter that has just begun. Our goal moving forward is to attend and compete at the national level at Disney World next June."

Members that placed in the top three of each test qualified for competition at the HOSA National Conference, which was held this year in Nashville, TN. Lack of funding prevented the students from attending and competing in the event this year, however.
