BATAVIA, NY (11/18/2014)(readMedia)-- Anna Adams of Lima started taking ACE (Accelerated College Enrollment) classes at GCC in Fall 2011, when she was just 15 years old. Now 18, Anna is pursuing two degrees and has already earned certificates from the Teaching Assistant and Child Care programs. She's been helped by the Alumni Legacy Scholarship. Students can begin applying for scholarships for the 2015-2016 academic year on January 1, 2015. Applications are due by March 1 st.

Alumni Legacy Scholarships are awarded to children and parents of GCC graduates who are full-time students. The scholarship is an investment in the future of exemplary students who bring pride and honor to their families, GCC, and the entire community.

Anna's mother, Jennifer (Keys) Adams, graduated from GCC with nursing and general studies degrees in 1982. The family now owns Grateful Hearts Farm in Lima. Anna, who is the second of the Adams' six children, was a homeschool student when she first came to the College. During her first year taking classes full-time in 2013-14 she was one of 12 students chosen to receive the Alumni Legacy Scholarship. She earned the $500 scholarship again in 2014-15. "It definitely helps cover the monetary expenses," she wrote in a thank you letter to the GCC Foundation. "It's delightful to see her blossoming," her mother said.

Recipients of the scholarship must submit an essay for consideration. They are selected by a committee on the basis of grade point average, past awards and honors, leadership and service to others.

Anna is pursuing Human Services and Teaching Assistant degrees. Her schoolwork has demonstrated a commitment to service. She completed five internships during the 2013-14 year at a food pantry, a Christian school, a senior living facility, and a therapeutic riding center. "The internships helped prove to me how much I love helping people, teaching children, and bringing a smile to someone's face," she wrote, noting that "Sometimes the opposite happens: the people bring a smile to your face."

Anna expects to complete both degrees as well as two more certificates (Gerontology and Developmental Disabilities Studies) by Spring 2015. She plans to seek full-time employment in one of her areas of study. "If my 'dream job' requires further schooling, however, I will probably pursue a Bachelor's degree."

The GCC Foundation offers more than 70 scholarships. Students can review available scholarships on the Financial Aid page of the College website www.genesee.edu/finaid. Students only need to fill out one application, then they can select as many scholarships as they'd like to pursue. Scholarship applications for 2015-16 can be submitted from January 1, 2015 – March 1, 2015.
