GCC Warsaw to Offer Child Development Screenings

BATAVIA, NY (03/26/2015)(readMedia)-- Are you a parent or caregiver looking for more information on child development or parenting? Would you like help recognizing and celebrating a child's developmental milestones? Genesee Community College is partnering with Help Me Grow Western New York to offer FREE developmental screenings for children under age five. The screenings will be available at GCC's Warsaw Campus Center on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 from 4 - 7:30 p.m. GCC Warsaw is located at 115 Linwood Ave., Warsaw, NY.

At the event, parents and caregivers will have access to information on general child development and parenting. GCC nursing students will work with representatives from Help Me Grow WNY to provide free developmental screenings to children ages birth to five using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire. In addition, parents will learn about fun activities they can do with their children at home.

The Ages and Stages Questionnaire assesses the five major areas of development: gross motor, fine motor, communication, problem solving and social-emotional development. It's a great tool through which parents can discover their child's strengths and uncover any potential areas of concern, which can help them determine meaningful next steps in learning, intervention or monitoring.

If it's determined that your child could benefit from extra support to reach certain developmental milestones, Help Me Grow WNY will connect you and your family with the information and resources you need, including early intervention, family therapy, literacy support, mentoring and tutoring programs, parenting classes and recreational opportunities.

There is no cost for this developmental screening, but those interested are asked to register in advance by calling GCC's Warsaw Campus Center at (585) 786-3010.
