Ken Allerton, Lima Instructor of the Semester

BATAVIA, NY (06/25/2014)(readMedia)-- Lima, NY- The Lima Campus Center of Genesee Community College is pleased to announce the Spring 2014 Students and Instructors of the Semester. Each semester, honorees are chosen for outstanding academic or teaching performance.

Ken Allerton of Avon has been awarded Instructor of the Semester at Lima for Spring 2014. Allerton was nominated by Doreen Palmer, a student in his Cell Biology class, who says he "pushes his student to strive for their best work." She appreciates that he cares that the students are learning what he is teaching and takes time before and after class to help students if they're struggling in any areas. He also makes himself available outside regular class hours.

Math Instructor Jackie Fenton of Livonia has also been recognized as Instructor of the Semester at Lima for Spring 2014. Several of Mrs. Fenton's Basic Math and Introductory Algebra students nominated her, saying she is "always motivating and encouraging students," and she goes "the extra mile to provide students with personal extra help." Students appreciate that Mrs. Fenton "knows more than one way to explain things, and she doesn't make anyone feel stupid for not understanding." Her "exceptional effort" ensures that all students get the help they need to be successful. She runs several math labs and even offers tutoring to students. As one student put it "that makes an irritating subject like math a lot easier and even fun!"

Two students have been named Students of the Semester at the Lima Campus Center.

Emily Evans of Lima is described as a "hard working student." Her statistics instructor, Ms. Nelya Pomayda, compliments Emily for showing "a great degree of improvement in academic maturity." Emily has recorded perfect attendance and has completed all of her assignments on time.

Lindsay Kober of Lima has also been named Student of the Semester, nominated by her English Instructor John Molyneux who marvels at the initiative Lindsay takes to not only help others but actually solve their problems. "I am in awe as to how willing and capable she is at assisting classmates with financial aid forms, computer virus remedies, or parts for a furnace boiler (actual examples) while still keeping focused on her own classwork." He's come up with his own unique catch phrase to describe her attributes. "For documentation and research there is the college library. For everything else - there's Kober."

"It's always an honor and a pleasure to recognize these outstanding individuals," said Patty Chaya, associate dean of the Lima Campus Center. "They serve as an example of the excellence we strive for daily and are an inspiration to all."
