OMCA Scholarship Recipient, Lindsey Turrell

BATAVIA, NY (11/17/2016)(readMedia)-- Each year, the Ontario Motor Coach Association (OMCA) awards scholarships to assist students enrolled in a travel or tourism program whose intentions are to enter the motor coach and/or the tour and travel industry. This year, Genesee Community College Tourism and Hospitality major Lindsey Turrell was recognized as one of four recipients of the OMCA Industry Scholarship, worth $2,000. Lindsey is an Appleton, New York native and a sophomore at GCC.

Lindsey, a Barker High School graduate, was chosen for the scholarship based on outstanding academic achievement, industry and community involvement, as well as her intention to pursue a career in the tourism and hospitality industry after earning an associate degree from GCC. After finishing her degree in the spring of 2017, she plans to move to Las Vegas to further her education and experience in tourism and hospitality.

"I would love to work for either AAA as a travel agent or an events coordinator for a company," Turrell said of her future plans. "I want to continue my education to earn a bachelor's and a master's degree, maybe even a Ph.D. Maybe I'll be back at GCC as a professor to motivate and inspire students some day!"

A member of the GCC Travel Club, Lindsey cites the many opportunities at the College as well as the faculty and staff for her success.

"My favorite experience was going to Toronto with the Travel Club. It was my first trip to Canada," Turrell explained. "It was such a great experience with all of the friends I have made here at GCC." The trip included a visit to Second City Comedy Club, Ripley's Aquarium, the CN Tower and plenty of restaurants.

As for the lasting impact from GCC faculty, Lindsey hails professor of Tourism and Hospitality Amy Slusser as her favorite instructor.

"Amy is my favorite teacher because she has been so supportive and helpful in my education. She has made my experience unforgettable and she motivates me to do my best and to follow my dreams," Turrell said.

Responsible for over 9.3% of the global gross domestic product, travel and tourism is one of the most important industries in the world in terms of economic impact and growth potential. While earning a degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management at GCC, students can prepare for careers such as travel agents, travel guides, event planners, sales managers, gaming supervisors and more. In addition, 75% or more of the associate in applied science (AAS) program can be completed online!
