Genesee Community College Presents a Day of Remembrance: A Tribute to 9/11

BATAVIA, NY (09/01/2011)(readMedia)-- To honor the memory of all those affected by September 11, 2001, Genesee Community College will commemorate the tenth anniversary with 'A Day of Remembrance' on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011. This anniversary event is designed to be a shared moment of remembrance, understanding, and peacemaking and is open to the public. The event will take place in the Clocktower Plaza at the Batavia campus from 12:30 to 1 pm. In case of inclement weather, the event will move inside to the William W. Stuart Forum.

The event will include brief remarks from college administrators. The poem, "The Names" by Billy Collins will be read and a moment of silence will be observed. The event will also feature "God Bless America" sung by a GCC student and light refreshments will be served in the foyer of the Conable Technology Building. The event will be live-streamed to all six of GCC's campus centers in Albion, Arcade, Dansville, Lima, Medina and Warsaw.

The College has designated a Facebook Group as a virtual repository for community members to enter their thoughts, prayers, feelings, impressions and photos to share with the world as they remember the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Submissions can also be emailed to Student Activities at In the spring, the thoughts, artwork, photos and other submissions will be compiled into an art exhibit that will remain at the College for community residents to view for many years.

"September 11 will remain a distinct memory to many Americans," said Dr. Eunice Bellinger, executive vice president for Academic Affairs at GCC. "This is the College's opportunity to bring the community together to remember and reflect on those tragic events. We hope to develop a commemorative work of art from all of the written and photographed submissions that will be gathered and assembled to be displayed at the college for years to come."

In addition to the Day of Remembrance ceremony, the Alfred C. O'Connell Library at GCC will also present a display in the front of the library, featuring books and periodicals from its collection. The History Channel, National Geographic and the Internet Archive are among the many Internet resources featuring extensive coverage of the day and the anniversary events.

Thirty "New York Remembers" exhibitions are being organized by the State Museum and the National September 11 Memorial and Museum as part of a statewide recognition of the tenth anniversary. Local exhibit locations include: Burchfield Penney Art Center at Buffalo State College, the Rochester Museum and Science Center, and the Batavia City Hall.
