Genesee Cougar to Participate in SUNY Mascot Madness

BATAVIA, NY (02/26/2013)(readMedia)-- Genesee Community College will represent one of 30 State University of New York colleges this March in the first ever "SUNY Mascot Madness." The contest includes representation from 472 athletic teams and 220,000 students, matching SUNY school mascots up with one another in a bracket style competition modeled after the college basketball tournaments that take place each March.
Genesee Community College and mascot, "GDUB," are the number 21 seed and will match up with #5 SUNY Delhi in the first round. Seed rankings are based on the number of teams that a particular campus represents. Enrollment data was used to break any ties. The top two seeds, Brockport and Cortland, received first round byes.
Voting is conducted via social media and voters must follow SUNY on Twitter (@SUNY) or "like" them on Facebook (www.facebook.com/generationsuny). Each person is allowed one vote per round, per matchup.
The official launch of SUNY Mascot Madness will be Monday, March 4 at 12:00 PM. The competition schedule includes five rounds with the final round taking place from Friday, March 29 through Thursday, April 4. The winning school will receive an undisclosed prize from the SUNY office.
Genesee Community College athletics program, which includes the Cougar mascot and Cheer Team, endeavors to provide a quality and competitive intercollegiate athletics program consistent with the National Junior Collegiate Athletics Association (NJCAA) philosophy and the overall educational mission of Genesee Community College. Participation in collegiate athletics should be an extension of the total educational experience for the student athlete. The inherent philosophy emphasizes the athletic setting as a classroom used to teach character, commitment, work ethic, respect for differences, and the importance of sacrifice, teamwork, and cooperation.
