Genesee Cougars Headed to the Finals in Herkimer, GCC Board of Trustees Hear

Men's Soccer Team Hits a Perfect Season

BATAVIA, NY (11/11/2015)(readMedia)-- Ending their regular soccer season with a perfect 17-0 record, GCC Athletic Director Kristen Schuth gave the Board of Trustees plenty to root about at Monday night's monthly meeting as Genesee Community College men's soccer team heads into the final stretch of the NJCCA (National Junior College Athletic Association) Division III Championship starting this Thursday, November 12 at 1:30 pm.

The GCC Cougars captured its second regional title in College history, advancing to its second-ever national tournament. They play Bunker Hill Community College (14-7) on Thursday, and hope to advance to the second day of the Championship on Friday, November 13 at 4 p.m., with the final game scheduled Sunday, November 15 at 2 p.m.

Men's Soccer was not the only team to have a successful season, Director Schuth reported to the Trustees. The women's soccer team ranked as high as fourth in the nation this fall, closing its season with an 11-6 record. And, women's volleyball went 34 – 9 – 2, ending its stellar season in the Region III Division III title match with three hard fought games against the MCC Tribunes, who captured the championship title.

In other business, the Board of Trustees:

Heard a report about the use of social media in advertising from Associate Director of Marketing Communications Donna Rae Sutherland. Genesee Community College continues to explore new digital advertising opportunities using tools such as Google Adwords, Google Remarketing, Pandora internet radio, Facebook, YouTube and Linked In. Among the benefits of deploying "21st Century" advertising options is the ability to target messages to specific age groups and geographic locations, as well as "paying per click," and assessing campaign success with very precise analytics that feature CTR or click-through rates.

Appointed Kristen Hargrave as an academic advisor / technical assistant. A GCC alumnus, Hargrave earned a Communication and Media Arts AAS from GCC in 2005. She continued on to the State University College at Buffalo for a Bachelor of Arts in Communication / Broadcasting, and to the University of Buffalo for a Master of Science in Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration. Her prior experience includes working at Batavia High School as a career resource specialist, and last summer she worked at GCC as a part-time academic advisor. She resides in Batavia.

Approved the recommendations of the Board of Trustees Policy Committee as part of the Committee's routine review of College Policies. Specifically, the following five College Policies were reaffirmed: Policy 4001, Statement of Confidentiality of Student Records; Policy 4003, Off-Campus Discipline; Policy 4004, Student Social Functions; Policy 4007, Health and Counseling Services, and Policy 4008, Student Code of Conduct. Policy 1026, Campus Crime and Security was amended by the Policy Committee and approved by the Board of Trustees. This revised policy replaces Policies 1027-1031 which were determined to be redundant and dating back more than 25 years.
