ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (03/23/2011)(readMedia)-- For large and/or growing family businesses, instituting a board of directors or advisors can mean the difference between thriving or failing. If your family business would benefit from the expert council that a board can render, you have a chance to learn from one of the most seasoned family business advisors in the Mid-Atlantic region through an executive workshop at the S. Dale High Center for Family Business at Elizabethtown College.

The workshop called "Getting Your Board Up and Running: An Executive How-To" will be offered on Wednesday, April 20, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and is open to members and non-members of the High Center.

Bill Alexander, executive-in-residence at the High Center, will walk participants through all the necessary steps--how to implement a board of directors or alternately, a board of advisors, including defining the board agenda, clarifying board compensation, recruiting outside board members, and evaluating top management.

A family business expert, entrepreneur, and community leader, Bill Alexander was a third-generation principal and CEO of a large family business in the construction industry in central Pennsylvania, H.B. Alexander.

He is also a professor at the Wharton School of Business and formerly the Sara Lodge Visiting Professor of Business at Elizabethtown College, serves as a director on a number of prominent business boards including Herr Foods, The Hershey Company, The Ratner Companies, Penn National Mutual Insurance Company, and Highmark Blue Shield. He was formerly the managing director of the Snider Entrepreneurial Research Center. He holds an undergraduate degree in engineering from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh.

If you are serious about creating a board, this is the workshop to take. The event is held in Hoover Building on the Elizabethtown College campus.

The fee is $250 for members and $300 for non-members. Advance registration is required. To register call 717-361-1275, email fbc@etown.edu or register from a from on the Center's website.
