Global Youth Service Day 2008

Thousands of New York kids and teens mobilize to make a difference

NEW YORK, NY (04/16/2008)(readMedia)-- Children for Children (CFC), a not-for-profit organization, in partnership with Fidelity Investments, and Youth Service America, will mobilize more than 20,000 young people to participate in the 20th Annual Global Youth Service Day, Friday, April 25 through Sunday, April 27, 2008. CFC’s young volunteers will participate at over 150 sites across the state of New York. Every year, millions of youth in the United States, and in more than 120 countries, lead simultaneous service events for Global Youth Service Day, the largest annual service event in the world.

“Through our efforts on Global Youth Service Day, Children for Children hopes to make a lasting impact on New York communities and encourage young people to become leaders in their own communities,” said Maggie Jones, executive director of Children for Children. “This weekend has been a highlight for years, and we are thrilled to serve as New York’s Lead Agency for 2008. We look forward to calling on our terrific youth, family, schools and community-based organizations in New York to make this a meaningful weekend and showcase the many ways that children give to their communities.”

"As a long-time supporter of Children for Children and Global Youth Service Day, Fidelity Investments is thrilled to be the CFC’s lead sponsor for its New York activities, and is particularly excited that its volunteers will be hands-on at CFC’s first service project in Jersey City, during the PSEG Global Green Expo," said Amy K. Sweeney, Site General Manager for Fidelity Investments. "Our volunteers enjoy giving back to the community and look forward to sharing their enthusiasm for environmental responsibility and community service with the next generation during this exciting event."

Global Youth Service Day mobilizes young people to identify and address community needs through service, puts youth on a life-long path of service and civic engagement, and educates the public about the role of youth as leaders and community assets.
