AIKEN, SC (03/09/2018) University of South Carolina Aiken supporters from around the area participated in the 13th annual golf tournament at The Reserve Club at Woodside Plantation, sponsored by USC Aiken's Alumni Association.

All proceeds raised from the USC Aiken Scramble for Scholarships will help defray students' tuition costs.

"As alumni of USC Aiken, we believe it's important to give back to the university and help students who may need a financial boost to help them achieve their educational goals," said Kristin Medlin, president of the USC Aiken Alumni Association, who graduated in 2003 with a degree in business management.

For the 2018 golf tourney, 20 teams - made up of 78 golfers - teed off mid-morning for the 18-hole course at the Reserve Club. The winning team was made up of: Brandon Flynt, Class of '99; Jason Langdale, Class of '01; Heath Bradham; and Bobby Powers.

Their efforts, coupled with the other golfers who participated, netted approximately $11,000 for scholarships.

Each year the University of South Carolina Aiken Alumni Association awards two types of scholarships. One is the Alumni Student Involvement Scholarship, and the other is the Alumni Legacy Scholarship. Applications are currently being accepted for both scholarships.

The USC Aiken Alumni Legacy Scholarship is awarded to students whose parents, grandparents, or legal guardians are alumni of USC Aiken and who have contributed to the Alumni Association or University Annual Giving Fund within the current year.

The Student Involvement Scholarship provides funding for undergraduate students who are engaged and involved in USC Aiken student clubs or organizations.

The USC Aiken Alumni Association awards 10-15 of these scholarships each year to undergraduate students who have contributed to USC Aiken clubs or organizations, demonstrating commitment, leadership skills or potential. These are annual scholarships, and students must apply by April 1 of each year to be considered. The Alumni Board Scholarship Committee makes decisions based on the scholarship application and additional information provided by the applicants.

"The more scholarship money we raise, the more we are able to help reduce post-graduation debt for our students and families," said Randy Duckett, director of Alumni Relations at USC Aiken.

"Now more than ever, we need and are very thankful to our sponsors, players, alumni, volunteers and partners for coming together to create scholarships for our students."

In addition to the efforts of the golfers and USC Aiken alumni, generous sponsors of the tournament help make these scholarships available.
