Grace Christian University Visits Spectrum Health Security Team

Spectrum Hospital's security team opened its doors with a unique look inside their daily responsibilities to the students in Grace Christian University's Criminal Justice 380 class.

On Tuesday, February 25, Security Team Captain Mr. Brad Estep, provided a tour of the facility and discussed the importance of maintaining security at a large metropolitan hospital. This opportunity allowed students to see firsthand job opportunities available to individuals with criminal justice degrees. Estep shared job opportunities available for those interested in the field of criminal justice and stressed the need for higher education in that line of work. He encouraged the students to consider working for Spectrum Health and reminded them whether short term or long term, anyone working at the hospital would get a great experience and receive training to help them become successful.

Highlights of the tour included visiting the top of the hospital where the care flight helicopters land as well as hearing firsthand accounts of the security team in action.

Estep recalled an incident involving a woman who struggled with mental health. She attacked him while he was trying to help her. Being a member of the security team, he had the authority to arrest her and take her to jail for the assault. Instead, he chose a compassionate approach and took her to the Emergency Room instead. She was admitted as a patient and doctors were able to stabilize her. Estep called this "a success story."

Onsite visits like the Spectrum Health security team tour are invaluable to college students pursuing degrees in any career field. Experiential learning brings to life the subject matter discussed in the classroom.
