ANNVILLE, PA (08/16/2016)(readMedia)-- Grammy award-winning folk artist Dom Flemons will visit Lebanon Valley College to perform and teach workshops from Sept. 13–14. The public is invited to attend Flemons' performance Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in Zimmerman Recital Hall of the Suzanne H. Arnold Gallery.

Known as the "American Songster," Flemons' music pulls from traditions of old-time folk music to create new sounds. Flemons is a talented musician who plays banjo, guitar, harmonica, fife, bones, bass drum, snare drum, and quills, in addition to singing.

As part of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, which he co-founded with Rhiannon Giddens and Justin Robinson, Flemons has played at a variety of festivals spanning from the Newport Folk Festival to Bonnaroo, in addition to renowned venues such as the Grand Ole Opry. The Carolina Chocolate Drops, an African-American string band, won a Grammy for its 2011 album Genuine Negro Jig and was nominated for its most recent album, Leaving Eden, in 2012. While performing with the group, Flemons was able to explore his interest in bringing traditional music to new audiences.

Flemons' September visit will launch the Lebanon Valley College Music Alliance, a larger project extending throughout the academic year. The goal of the alliance will be to use music as a tool to build relationships that cross social, cultural, and racial divides, bringing together students from throughout campus who otherwise might not get to know each other. Four musician-facilitators will take part in the alliance during the course of the academic year, working to create a new weekly tradition of informal performances in the Dutchmen Den in Rosemary Yuhas Commons on Thursday evenings.

Those who participate in the alliance would agree to respect the music of others, to seek solidarity with those whose music is different from their own, to use music as a tool for communication and reconciliation when that is possible, and to see musical boundaries as permeable. The alliance will encourage students at all levels of ability to find their passion in making music.
