Poucher, asst. principal of the year

ALBANY, NY (04/09/2013)(readMedia)-- Daniel Poucher, assistant principal of Granville Junior/Senior High School in the Granville Central School District, has been selected as the 2013 New York State Assistant Principal of the Year by the School Administrators Association of New York State (SAANYS). This award is given annually to a member of SAANYS and the National Association of Secondary School Principals, who has set the pace, character, and quality of education for the children in his or her school. Nominees are administrators who are committed to students, parents, and the community and have shown exceptional contributions to the educational process.

Poucher has served as an educator for 10 years including four years in his present position. In addition, he coached several sports for many years and in that capacity acted as role model and mentor for many players. Granville Junior/Senior High is a grade 7-12 rural school with a total enrollment of approximately 640 students.

Several letters of recommendation attest to Poucher's character and commitment to his students, district, and community. Diane Dumas, principal at Granville, stated, "His interactions with students are always handled professionally – with compassion and understanding. The students know that; while Mr. Poucher has high expectations for them, he will also support them as they work to achieve those expectations."

English language arts teacher Ann O'Brien agrees. "His (Poucher's) support of the PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) program in our high school is constant year after year." Noted Poucher, "Utilizing the framework of the PBIS program, discipline referrals have been greatly reduced." He went on to say that the value of collaboration – with administrators, faculty, support staff, and parents – has made a real difference. "When students know that everyone around them is pulling for the same outcomes, we have set the table for their success."

Poucher is active in his community as well as his school. He is a volunteer at Haynes House of Hope Hospice Facility, has been a Little League softball coach, volunteer coach/teacher at Truthville Christian Academy, and served on the crisis intervention team for the New York State Department of Corrections.

Poucher will be honored for his accomplishments at an awards ceremony on May 10, 2013 at the Century House in Latham. As the SAANYS/NASSP Assistant Principal of the Year, Poucher is now a candidate for the award of National Assistant School Principal of the Year, an award sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) and The Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. A principals institute and awards ceremony sponsored by NASSP and MetLife will be held in Washington, DC this fall.
