Grow Involved® on Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2009

Youth and Family Volunteer Event: Thousands of New York City kids and teens mobilize to make a difference in their communities, in honor of Dr. King's 80th birthday

NEW YORK, NY (01/15/2009)(readMedia)-- Children for Children (CFC), the Citi Foundation, and "I Have A Dream" Foundation will be partnering to bring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s message of service to life by holding a series of youth volunteer events on Martin Luther King Day (January 19, 2009). More than 20 hands-on service projects will be completed at each of Children for Children's two New York City hubs, as well as at 12 "I Have A Dream" sites across the United States. Service projects will include creating warm scarves for the homeless, making toiletry care kits for the homeless, awareness building for malaria prevention, and mural painting - all in honor of Dr. King and his legacy of service.

Thousands of NYC young people and their families have made this annual Martin Luther King Day service event an important tradition in their lives. "We really believe in what Dr. King and his message really meant," reported Daquan Daly, a CFC volunteer at last year's event. "Doing community service really keeps the dream going."

"Children for Children invites all youth to volunteer on Martin Luther King Day, in honor of Dr. King's 80th birthday and in remembrance of the 40th anniversary of his assassination. We encourage all young people to become leaders in their own communities," said Maggie Jones, Executive Director of Children for Children. "This year, we join President Elect Barack Obama in his call to action, honoring MLK Day as a national day of volunteering."
