HANYC to Release Final Data on World Cup's Impact on NYC Hotels
The tournament fell far short of projections, failing to deliver a much-needed economic boost to city hotels.
NEW YORK, NY (07/22/2026) (readMedia)-- On Thursday afternoon, the Hotel Association of New York City (HANYC) will hold a press briefing to present its final data highlighting the disappointing economic impact of World Cup on New York City's hotel industry. The final data confirm that the tournament, which was expected to be a major economic boom that would generate an additional $300 million in revenue for hotels, turned out to be a big bust.
Vijay Dandapani, HANYC President and CEO will provide an analysis of the final numbers and discuss what the results mean for New York's tourism economy, hotel workforce, and future major events. Joel Rosen, President, GFI Hospitality LLC, will share his perspective as a hotel owner, followed by a Q&A.
The industry had been warning for months that World Cup bookings were falling short of the goal for what should be a once-in-a-generation economic opportunity. International visitors, who spend on average four-times more than domestic travelers, faced significant barriers to entry, including travel bans, visa delays, immigration crackdowns, and other travel restrictions. Those policies dampened demand from international travelers who would otherwise be filling hotel rooms. The war with Iran further compounded the problem, triggering an additional 10% to 15% decline in hotel business.
The World Cup disappointment comes as the industry faces major headwinds from slowed revenue growth, persistent inflation, rising operating costs, and the prolonged tourism slowdown while struggling to recover from pandemic losses, which a recent report from the New York State Comptroller confirmed. Together, they threaten a cornerstone of New York City's economy that supports more than 40,000 hotel workers and 400,000 hospitality workers while generating billions in annual tax revenue that helps fund essential public services. After the World Cup disappointment, the industry is calling for greater support to continue providing nation-leading wages and billions of dollars in tax revenue that fund essential city services.
