ANNVILLE, PA (10/14/2016)(readMedia)-- More than 100 local students from 23 area high schools will enjoy a two-day honors orchestra festival at Lebanon Valley College, culminating with a public performance Saturday, Nov. 5 at 4 p.m. in Lutz Hall of the Bertha Brossman Blair Music Center. The event is free of charge.

The honors orchestra will perform a wide range of repertoire, including a concerto grosso by Handel, and movements from the "Serenade For Strings" by Dvorak and Tchaikovsky. In keeping with tradition, students will also play a few recently-composed pieces.

"Unlike many ensemble festivals, ours features no competitive seating auditions," said Dr. Johannes Dietrich, Newton and Adelaide Burgner Endowed Professor of Instrumental Music and director of the Honors String Orchestra.

"Instead, students are recommended by area teachers, and then are mixed together into large and well-balanced sections-something that helps us attain the rich sound for which this ensemble is well-known," added Dr. Dietrich.

The College will welcome the student musicians Friday afternoon to begin rehearsals, which continue into Saturday leading up to the performance.

Student musicians who perform attend these area high schools: Annville, Blue Mountain, Cedar Crest, Central Dauphin, Central Dauphin East, Central York, Conestoga Valley, Ephrata, Hanover, Harrisburg Academy, Lebanon, Lebanon Catholic, Linden Hall, Lower Dauphin, Manheim Central, Manheim Township, Palmyra, Souderton, Spring Grove, Susquehanna Township, Susquehannock, Tulpehocken, Veritas Academy, and Warwick.

Lebanon Valley College's Music Department offers a variety of public performances by students, faculty, or guest visitors each semester. Please visit www.lvc.edu/music/events.aspx for additional information regarding upcoming events.
