Background:

Genesee Community College invites the public to the final scheduled presentation in the Historical Horizons Lecture Series. The lecture occurs Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at 7 p.m. and is presented by Derek Maxfield, GCC associate professor of History. As the end of the Civil War approached, Abraham Lincoln counseled his generals not to gloat in victory to avoid bitterness and animosity. "Let 'em up easy," he said. But Lincoln did not live to oversee much of Reconstruction, which took a dark turn. Eric Foner, author of the most definitive work on Reconstruction, called it a "splendid failure." Join Maxfield to find out why.

Historical Horizons is sponsored by GCC's new History Club and was developed from the success of the Civil War Initiative which featured dozens of events throughout the past three years commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Through the Fall 2015 semester, GCC History Club has sponsored a different historical lecture on the first Wednesday of the month. All events are FREE and open to the public and located in the Conable Technology Building on GCC's Batavia Campus in room T102.
