Honors Program at SUNY Delhi Challenges and Inspires

DELHI, NY (03/28/2018) (readMedia)-- High-achieving students who wish to take their studies to the next level may enroll in SUNY Delhi's Honors Program.

The college's program provides opportunities to challenge students intellectually with a variety of courses are offered. Some selections include Travel and Leisure in American History, Gender and Genre in Film, Medieval Literature, Public History in Culture and Memory, and Cancer Biology. If students want to delve into further topics, they can work with faculty to shape a course into an honors course that suits their interests.

"Four Veterinary Science Technology majors turned a spay and neuter clinic into an independent study course for which they received credits towards their honors participation," explained Dr. Terry Hamblin, Professor of SUNY Delhi's School of Liberal Arts and Sciences who is in his third year leading the program.

Students who qualify (who are full-time and a GPA of 3.3 or better) can receive a number of benefits. They are able to develop close, mentoring relationships with faculty members who are top in their fields. Students learn through an interdisciplinary approach, very often taking field trips or completing service-learning in the community and beyond.

Barbara Morrow is an honors student who believes the program offers her many advantages. Honors courses allow students to develop a specialization in their course of study. Many courses at Delhi are general and introductory, so being able to narrow one's scope of interest is useful," she says. "They also allow motivated students to develop closer relationships with professors. Small class sizes and the ability to conduct an independent study contribute to this."

Each year special scholarship opportunities are only available to students enrolled in the Honors Program. Best of all, said Dr. Hamblin, honors graduates receive a special recognition on their transcripts. "They also receive a medallion that they can wear at their graduation," he added.

SUNY Delhi's Honors Program is open to qualifying students who are pursuing either an associate's degree program or a bachelor's degree in any of the college's five schools.
