Hudson Falls Man Arrested In Trafficking Of Untaxed Cigarettes In Washington County
ALBANY, NY (07/22/2010)(readMedia)-- New York State Department of Taxation and Finance Acting Commissioner Jamie Woodward announced today the arrest of a Hudson Falls man on felony tax charges for the trafficking of untaxed cigarettes and possession of 208 cartons of untaxed cigarettes.
Following an investigation, Keith C. Schultz, 58, of 15 Geer Road, was arrested on July 21 in the Village of Hudson Falls by State Tax Department investigators. In the course of the arrest, agents found the untaxed cigarettes, which represent an estimated $9,500 in unpaid taxes to the state.
Schultz was charged with Unlawful Possession of Untaxed Cigarettes and Tax Fraud in the Third Degree, both class D felonies each punishable by up to seven years in state prison. He was also charged with Attempt to Evade Tax, a class E felony punishable by up to four years in state prison.
He was arraigned in the Village of Hudson Falls Court today before the Honorable Michael M. Feeder. He was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled to reappear in Washington County Court on August 10.
The office of Washington County District Attorney Kevin C. Kortright is coordinating the prosecution of this suspect. Acting Commissioner Woodward thanked the Washington County District Attorney's Office for their assistance in prosecuting this case.
The defendant is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty.
