Ice Cream Topping Win State Fair Awards

DES MOINES, IA (08/20/2021) (readMedia)-- Original ice cream toppings were the focus of competition in the My Favorite Ice Cream Topping contest, judged Thursday, August 19, at the 2021 Iowa State Fair.

Phyllis Olson of Newton won first place and a $100 cash award in the Sauces and Syrups class of competition. Patty Hunt of Ankeny claimed second place and $50. Brooklynn Sedlock of Indianola earned third place and $25.

In the Other Toppings class, Susan Schultz of Haverhill won top honors and $100. Heather Derr of Clive earned second place and $50.

Entries were judged on originality, taste and presentation.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 134 divisions, 603 classes and nearly 6500 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Urban Air.
