Illinois College Names Bellatti Award Recipients
JACKSONVILLE, IL (01/23/2012)(readMedia)-- Illinois College seniors Claire Hummel and Samer Anabtawi have been selected as Walter Bellatti Honor Scholars.
This award is presented to an outstanding male and female student from the senior class who has a strong academic record, is active in co-curricular activities, and demonstrates an interest in the welfare and progress of Illinois College.
Hummel is an elementary education major from Quincy working toward teaching endorsements for mathematics, science and middle school. She has been on the Dean's List every semester at Illinois College and has performed valuable services for the campus community as an IC Connections Leader, Student Ambassador and Alpha Phi Omega member.
Anabtawi will graduate in May after completing majors in political science, economics and French. The Jenin, Palestine, native studied abroad in Pau, France, during his junior year. He has been on the Dean's List every semester and also served as a congressional intern in Washington, D.C., this past summer. On campus, he founded the chapter of Amnesty International, was an active leader in the Coalition for Ethnic Awareness and the Progressive Action Coalition, and won the Martin Luther King Peacemaker Prize.
Both Hummel and Anabtawi were recognized as a Rammelkamp Scholar in each of the three years they were eligible.
The Walter Bellatti Honor Scholar Awards are made annually in honor of the late Walter Bellatti Sr., a 1905 graduate of Illinois College. The longtime trustee of Illinois College was a civic leader and Jacksonville attorney from 1908 until his death in 1963. The award was first given in 1967.
The chair of the Faculty Senate will present Hummel and Anabtawi with the award at the Honors Celebration on April 27, 2012.
