Illinois College's Abby West Wins Scholarship

JACKSONVILLE, IL (09/29/2011)(readMedia)-- Abby West of Jacksonville was one of six physical education students in the state of Illinois to be awarded a scholarship from the Illinois Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (IAHPERD).

The IAHPERD Scholar Award annually recognizes individuals who have developed an outstanding reputation as a scholar. Additionally, the award is designed to involve the scholar in the dissemination of knowledge in such a way as to benefit the disciplines and professional practices represented within IAHPERD.

"Abby is excelling in the classroom and as a leader in Illinois College's physical education program," said Amy Wilson, Illinois College Instructor in Education. "She is well-deserving of recognition as one of the top physical education students in the state of Illinois."

West is the first Illinois College student to receive the IAHPERD scholarship. She is an education major pursing a K-12 certification in physical education and health. The senior is vice president of the college's Physical Education Club and competes on the women's soccer team.

West earned an associate's degree at Heartland Community College and graduated Jacksonville High School. She is the daughter of Steve and Margie West of Jacksonville.
