Imber to discuss the evolution of advice at 'Ideas and Images' event

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL (03/29/2013)(readMedia)-- Wellesley College professor of sociology Jonathan Imber will discuss the evolution of giving advice when he speaks at Flagler College on April 4 as part of the College's "Ideas and Images" program.

"I am interested in the question of how the idea of vocation is understood in the present day, when so many more of us see work as a means to an end, which can be defined in a number of ways that are clearly different from each other," said Imber. "What advice should we give to the next generation, knowing that people pursue work for different reasons?"

Imber, who earned a BA from Brandeis University and his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, is the author of "Trusting Doctors: The Decline of Moral Authority in American Medicine," which examined how physicians acquired a revered place among all modern professions. He has also edited numerous books on a variety of sociological topics, including philanthropy, therapeutic culture, science policy and the relationship between markets and religion.

Imber's lecture, "Vocation and Vacation: Advice for Grownups," will take place on April 4 at 7 p.m. in the Flagler Room of Ponce de Leon Hall, 74 King St., St. Augustine.

"Ideas and Images: Visiting Scholars and Artists Program" will feature an international composition of artists and authors, introducing a fresh and creative component to the greater St. Augustine community.
