International Nonprofit Honors Charlottesville Nurse

NORFOLK, VA (09/06/2011)(readMedia)-- This fall, Physicians for Peace is honoring Emily Tinsley, RN, MSNEd, of Charlottesville, Va., for her selfless work as a volunteer burn care educator in Latin America. The award ceremony will place on Oct. 15 during the 2011 Physicians for Peace Gala in Norfolk, Va.

"Through her service to Physicians for Peace, Emily has promoted education, information-sharing and invaluable cultural exchanges," said Brig. Gen. Ron Sconyers (USAF, Ret.), president and chief executive officer of Physicians for Peace. "She's a person of intelligence, talent and compassion and a tremendous asset to our organization. It's a privilege to honor her this year with our Medical Diplomat Award."

Service, Dedication and Vision

Since 2004, Tinsley has played an important leadership role on Physicians for Peace burn care missions to Central and South America, most recently during a January 2011 mission to Ecuador. On missions, Tinsley uses her considerable experience as an international burn care educator and consultant to train and support host country healthcare professionals in underserved areas, where burns pose a serious threat, particularly to women and children.

"Physicians for Peace has always nourished my belief that learning is constant and requires a deep and genuine partnership with a common goal," Tinsley said. "My experiences with Physicians for Peace have consistently challenged me to look at the world through many eyes in an effort to connect with a wider range of individuals, cultures and environments."

At home in Virginia, Tinsley also is a tireless and engaged volunteer leader. She currently serves on the Medical Operations Committee, a volunteer advisory group of subject matter experts that provides programmatic oversight to Physicians for Peace, and she was a founding member of the organization's former Global Nursing Education Committee. In Charlottesville, outside of her service to Physicians for Peace, Tinsley is a passionate advocate for heightened knowledge and awareness of Lyme and other tick-borne diseases through the National Capital Lyme Disease Association.

Tinsley is one of three 2011 Medical Diplomat award winners. The other winners, Charlie Henderson, Jr., Hampton Roads market president for Bank of America, and Josephine "Penny" Bundoc, MD, volunteer director of the Physicians for Peace-Philippines Walking Free program based in Manila, also will be recognized at the gala, alongside Harvey L. Lindsay, Jr., chairman of Harvey Lindsay Commercial Real Estate in Norfolk, who will receive Physicians for Peace's Presidential Award.
