Internationally Recognized Hostage Negotiator to Share Message of Reconciliation at Elizabethtown College
Former Envoy of Archbishop of Canterbury Presents 2010 Ware Lecture on Peacemaking on April 13
ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (03/04/2010)(readMedia)-- Internationally recognized hostage negotiator and humanitarian Terry Waite will share a message of reconciliation and personal responsibility during Elizabethtown College's 2010 Ware Lecture on Peacemaking. Reflecting wisdom and experience gained over years of difficult hostage negotiations and captivity, Waite's message, "Resolving Conflicts: The Test of Humanity," will offer timely and relevant advice in an era of conflict and turmoil. This special event will be held Tuesday, April 13, at 7:30 p.m. in Leffler Chapel and Performance Center on the College's campus. A limited quantity of free tickets is being made available to the public. Those interested should call the College's Ticket Hotline at 717-361-4757.
A highlight of the College's cultural event series, the Ware Lecture on Peacemaking is part of the multi-faceted Ware Colloquium on Peacemaking and Global Citizenship. Delivered annually under the auspices of the College's Center for Global Citizenship, the Ware Colloquium has brought internationally known speakers -- including F.W. de Klerk, former president of South Africa; Mary Robinson, former president of Ireland; and Jody Williams, American Nobel Peace Laureate -- to central Pennsylvania. The Colloquium was created through the generous sponsorship of Judy S. '68 and Paul W. Ware.
Terry Waite -- hostage negotiator and author of "Taken on Trust" -- led a remarkable life as a diplomat and a humanitarian. He attracted international attention in the 1980s when, as a special envoy to the Archbishop of Canterbury, he successfully negotiated the release of hostages in Iran and then Libya. In 1987, while negotiating the release of hostages in Beirut, Waite himself was taken hostage and held in captive for 1,763 days -- four years of which were in solitary confinement. Founder of Hostage UK and Y Care International, he now devotes his time to intercultural relations, conflict resolution and humanitarian causes around the world.
