Iowa State Fair Jellies Title Goes to Waterloo Cook

DES MOINES, IA (08/14/2016)(readMedia)-- Michelle Westphal of Waterloo won First Place Overall and Reserve Sweepstakes honors in the C&H Classic Iowa Canned Jellies competition, judged Wednesday, prior to the start of the 2016 Iowa State Fair.

Louise Piper of Garner won Second Place Overall, and Rod Zeitler of Iowa City was awarded Third Place Overall and Sweepstakes honors.

Jellies are easy to make but hard to master. They're made with fruit and suger but unlike jams, marmalades, and preserves, a true jelly is translucent with no seeds or fruit in sight. Jelly is expected to hold its shape while still be easy to scoop out with a spoon.

Entries were judged on appearance, flavor, and consistency.
