Iowa State University architecture students win national concrete masonry competition

Iowa State University College of Design students won first place in the National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA) Education and Research Foundation's Unit Design Competition, which asks students to design a new concrete masonry or hardscape unit that could be mass produced and have a variety of uses. Selected from a regional competition to advance to the national competition, Iowa State's team was one of three finalists to present projects to judges at NCMA's mid-year meeting in Seattle.

Noah Torstenson, Muscatine, Iowa; Christopher Shoemaker, Urbandale, Iowa; and Jasen Langley, Newton, Iowa, now fourth-year students in architecture, developed the design for their winning "Purablock" with Gregorio Melchiorri, an exchange student from Italy, in the spring 2019 Building Science and Technology II class taught by Bosuk Hur, ISU assistant professor of practice in architecture.
