Iowa Wines Star in State Fair Cooking Competition

DES MOINES, IA (08/16/2018) (readMedia)-- Cooking with Iowa wine was the challenge faced by competitors in the #1 Wijk Wine competition judged Monday at the 2018 Iowa State Fair.

Mary Burr of Iowa City won first place in the Sauce/Glaze class of competition. Patty Hunt of Ankeny claimed second place and Amy Fuson of Indianola earned third place,

Sally Kilkenny of Granger won first place in the Dessert/Small Bites class. Jennifer Bartles of Des Moines earned second place and Jodi Brady Runnells claimed third place.

Cooks were tasked with creating an award worthy entry using any one of three Van Wijk Winery wines.

Entries were judged on best use of wine, creativity, taste and presentation.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 171 divisions, 727 classes and over 9,574 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
