Ishita Dalal of Stroudsburg Completes Honors Program

SCRANTON, PA (07/02/2010)(readMedia)-- Ishita Umesh Dalal of Stroudsburg was among 16 members of the Class of 2010 to graduate from The University of Scranton's Honors Program.
The Jesuit university's Honors Program enforces the tradition of excellence and personal development by challenging exceptional students with independent work and intense engagement with facility and their peers. This prestigious program is designed to increase the student's intellectual skills, self-reliance and personal accountability. The program requires each student to complete year-long comprehensive research, creative or independent project.
For her research project, Dalah studied "PCR Detection of Burkholderia Cenocepacia." She used PCR to find a primer pair that is specific for B. cenocepacia. In doing so, she hoped to aid with research about detection and treatment of respeiratory infections caused by these bacteria in people with cystic fibrosis. Her research was conducted with a faculty mentor Michael Sulzinski, Ph. D., professor of biology.
Dalal graduated from Scranton with a bachelor of science, magna cum laude, in biology and philosophy. She plans to attend Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in the fall.
