Jacob Shafer awarded prestigious scholarship

GRANVILLE, OH (07/15/2011)(readMedia)-- Recent Denison University graduate Jacob Shafer of Columbus (43214), has been awarded a prestigious Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship. The $30,000 award carries admission into a master's program in education and is awarded only to students in the science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) fields. In return, Shafer has agreed to teach in a high-need urban or rural secondary school for three years. He holds degrees in mathematics and secondary education from Denison. Shafer is one of six Denison students to be honored this year with an international scholarship.

The Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship seeks to recruit, prepare and retain effective teachers for the students and schools who need them most. Fellows attend enriched, school-based master's-level teacher education programs, complemented by intensive mentoring during the first three years of teaching at high-need urban and rural schools.
