Jefferson Baker Wins State Fair Two-Crust Pie Honors

DES MOINES, IA (08/23/2023) (readMedia)-- Marianne Carlson of Jefferson won first place and a $200 cash award in the North "40" Pie Contest, judged Sunday, August 13, at the 2023 Iowa State Fair.

Anita Van Gundy of Des Moines earned second place $125. Susie Jones of Winterset claimed third place and $75.

Judges awarded Honorable Mention to Phyllis Olson of Newton.

Entrants were tasked to create an award-winning two-crust pie that did not use canned pie filling.

Pies were judged on flavor and appearance.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 138 divisions, 695 classes and over 6,800 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center.
