Jeremy Perrin of Cockeysville Honored as Finalist for American Physical Society Award

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD (10/08/2013)(readMedia)--  Jeremy Perrin, Cockeysville, Md., native and recent St. Mary's College of Maryland graduate, has been recognized as one of five finalists for the American Physical Society's (APS) LeRoy Apker Award. This award is given for excellence in undergraduate research in physics, and rewards young physicists for their scientific research potential.

Perrin completed his research as part of his St. Mary's Project (SMP)-a culminating project of original research, scholarship or creative performance undertaken in the senior year-which was mentored by Dr. Erin De Pree. He was nominated by the St. Mary's College of Maryland Physics Department for this award, and underwent an intensive evaluation process before being selected as a finalist.

"Professor De Pree and I have both been quite honored by this recognition of our research," says Perrin of his finalist status. "The subject matter of the research is certainly more advanced than most people would expect at an undergraduate level. I thank Professor De Pree for preparing me for this research through new and improved courses in advanced quantum mechanics and particle physics. Without these courses, I certainly wouldn't have been prepared to do the research I did."

Perrin and the other finalists will be featured the October edition of APS News, the monthly newsletter for the American Physical Society.

St. Mary's College of Maryland, designated the Maryland state honors college in 1992, is ranked one of the best public liberal arts schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. More than 2,000 students attend the college, nestled on the St. Mary's River in Southern Maryland.
